Microsoft announces Xbox One sales record; and it’s well behind PS4

Microsoft announces Xbox One sales record

Microsoft has finally disclosed how many Xbox One have been sold since it came out. For the past seven years, the company hasn’t said much.

When a governing body gets involved in a procurement process, we often find out about classified info that companies have kept secret for one reason or another. Now that Microsoft is giving us all the paperwork we need to close on the purchase of Activision, a piece of information has come out that we only had estimates for before. We are talking about the number of Xbox Ones sold, of course.

You don’t have to be a genius to know that the PlayStation 4 was the best console of the last generation, from the beginning to the end. This is mostly because Microsoft’s first strategy was wrong. Instead of focusing on video games, managers put more emphasis on an entertainment system that did everything.

Xbox One sales

In a document sent to the Brazilian regulatory body, Satya Nadella and his team said that they sold 58.5 million Xbox Ones until 2021, when they stopped making them to focus on the Xbox Series X|S. This is the same year that Sony and Microsoft made similar claims about buying Activision. On paper, the number isn’t negative, but when compared to PS4 sales, it becomes negative.

More like this: Microsoft’s Xbox vs. PlayStation console rivalry continues

Sony says that up until March of this year, the PlayStation 4 had sold 117,2 million units. In fact, it will be the last time that people in Japan report this information, since the hardware in question will no longer be made.

When we know both numbers, we can say that the sales ratio is 2 to 1. So, for every Xbox One that was sold, two PlayStation 4s were also sold. The difference is big, especially when we think about how sales on the two platforms had just been pretty even. Let’s remember that there wasn’t much difference between the Xbox 360 and the PS3.

The current generation of Xbox is a different tale

Now, what is going on in this generation is nothing like what happened in the last one. Phil Spencer is leading Xbox in the right direction so it can compete with PlayStation. The Xbox Series X and Series S had the best possible start to their lives. Not only because of how nice its hardware is and how cheap the budget version is, but also because it runs on Xbox Game Pass, which is the best gaming service out there right now.

To all of this, we must add that Microsoft is going all out to improve its library of games. Which was one of the Xbox One’s most criticized features. The deal to buy Bethesda’s owner, Zenimax, for $7.5 billion was made public in 2020. The deal was finished in early 2021.

But in January of this year, when they said they wanted to buy Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion, that was the real bombshell. The latter, on the other hand, has not yet been approved by regulators, even though everything points to it being easy to close. When it’s done, it will be the most expensive video game ever bought. Xbox will be in charge of games like Call of Duty and World of Warcraft.

At this point, it’s hard to say for sure who will win this generation. You can be sure, though, that the difference in sales won’t be too big.
