How to add extensions to Chrome on Android

Chrome extensions

Extensions are one of the best things about Chrome. But Google Chrome on Android doesn’t have this kind of support. At least on paper. There are ways to do this, which is good news.

When Google Chrome came out, extensions were one of the things that made it stand out. As a legacy of Mozilla Firefox, extensions let third-party developers add their apps to Chrome or even add new features to Chrome that Google hadn’t thought of adding to its web browser.

At the moment, Google Chrome has hundreds of extensions and apps that let us do everything. But there is an issue. And the reason is that Chrome extensions can only be used with the desktop version of this browser or, at best, with Chrome OS. How about the Android?

Google Chrome for Android does not have extensions, according to the company. Another way to say it. If you use an Android device to go to the Chrome Web Store, you won’t be able to install any extensions. The bad news is that. The good news is that there are Chromium-based alternatives to Google Chrome for Android. Some of them even let you use add-ons.

Extensions for Chrome in Kiwi

Kiwi will be the first alternative to Google Chrome for Android that we will use. Kiwi Browser is a web browser for Android that is unique. One of its unique features is that it uses the same Chromium source code as Chrome. And a long list of other browsers like Opera, Brave, Edge, etc.

Another thing that makes it stand out is that it works with Chrome extensions. It’s one of the things that sets it apart from Google Chrome for Android on its own official page. Plus, it’s as easy as installing an extension on Windows or macOS.

More from us: Chrome extensions that make life easier

Once Kiwi is installed on Android through Google Play, all you have to do is open this web browser and show the menu in the upper right corner. It will have a Google Chrome sound. Available options include Extensions . You can also type “kiwi:/extensions” in the address bar to go to that section.

The first time, the screen will be empty. As you install extensions, they will fill it up. And to make it easy, you will see a link that takes you to the Kiwi Web Store. Once you get there, you’ll see the Chrome extensions you may have already put on your desktop browser. Even though they are not all compatible, most of them are.

To add an extension to Chrome, all you have to do is go to the tab for that extension and click the “Add to Chrome” button. Both downloading and installing happen on their own. Once the extension is set up, you can find it at “kiwi:/extensions,” as we did before.

To remove extensions, you’ll have to do the same thing you do in Google Chrome for Windows or macOS. That is, we click the Delete button in the Extensions section.

On Yandex Browser

Yandex Browser is the second alternative to Google Chrome for Android that we will use. To help you understand us, Yandex is what Google is in Russia. Or at least it’s the closest thing we can find in that country.

Yandex Browser is based on Google Chrome, just like the other browsers we’ve talked about. This makes it work with extensions for Chrome. And, unlike the original browser, this Russian version of the browser works with Android extensions. Also, when you install Yandex Browser from Google Play and open it, you can see the Extensions section by clicking on the drop-down menu.

You can also get to this section by clicking > Settings > Extensions > Extension Catalog from the drop-down menu. Yandex will suggest a few extensions to you by default. But if you go straight to the Google Chrome extensions store, you can install the ones you like best.

It’s easy to add extensions to your browser. You type in the file’s name and then click the “Add to Chrome” button. After you download it, it will set itself up on its own. In the Extensions section, you can see the installed extensions by using the dropdown menu.
