Google excludes Pixel 4 from Android beta

Google excludes Pixel 4 from Android beta

In less than two months, the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL will be on the market for three years. This means that they will no longer be guaranteed to get updates after October 2022. Although, we already know this because the Google excludes Pixel 4 from Android beta program

Google updated the Android Beta Program website on Monday to confirm the date of the Android 14 beta. Now, the page shows which Pixel devices will get Android 13 in a few days.

Pixel 4 no longer on Android beta

Google will release the first beta of Android 13 QPR1 in September. This is a quarterly update whose stable version was supposed to come out in December. However, we now know that the Pixel 4 and 4 XL will not get this update.

Google has changed the answer to the question “Which devices are eligible for the program?” on the FAQ page of the Android Beta Program website. The Pixel 4 is no longer listed as one of the eligible devices. Now, the only things that can get the next versions of Android 13 Beta are:

  • Pixel 4a
  • Pixel 4a (5G)
  • Pixel 5
  • Pixel 5a
  • Pixel 6
  • Pixel 6Pro
  • Pixel 6a

So, if Google doesn’t reverse that decision, the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL will continue to use Android 13, but they won’t get the small updates in December and March. New security patches are what they will get until at least October.

Google only promises to update its Android devices to new versions of Android for three years and for five years starting with the Pixel 6. Since 2015, no Pixel has received new Android updates. This has added a few more months to the security updates to fix a major problem.
